Midweek Round-up

Boxer gets a big boost with a personal Obama appearance for her California Senate seat.

Other successful Obama stump stops in the past few months:

  • Martha Coakley, candidate for former Massachusetts Senator Ted Kennedy's seat, 2009
  • Jon Corzine, Governor re-election in New Jersey, 2009
  • Creigh Deeds, Governor-candidate for Virginia, 2009

(Hint: All 3 seats went to the Republican challenger.)

I'm leaving on a jet plane...

Apparently that's all it took for Obama and Pelosi to snag Dennis Kucinch (D-OH). After speaking with President Obama, Speaker Pelosi and his wife -- and a plane ride on Air Force One -- Kucinich announced his firm support yesterday, despite criticizing the bill as too conservative.

Good to know our tax dollars went to polluting the sky some more to buy a political vote.

Non-legal immigrants, illegal aliens, undocumented workers... whatever you call them, there are an estimated 12 million of them in the United States. A compilation of statistics shows that California holds a full quarter of all illegal immigrants, equal to 40 other states.

Mexico leads the pack as the heaviest contributor -- about 7 million -- with the rest of the top 9 countries contributing less than 600,000 each. Honduras and Brazil have seen the largest percentage changes from 2000 with over 80% increases in foreign nationals who are illegally in the U.S.

Going on the road to sell his Healthcare bill in Cleveland this week, Obama told workers with employer-paid benefits, "Your employer, it's estimated, would see premiums fall by as much as 3,000 percent". The White House corrected the record afterwards, saying that the President meant to say $3,000.

However, others are saying something very different:

Premiums are likely to keep going up even if the health care bill passes, experts say. If cost controls work as advertised, annual increases would level off with time. But don't look for a rollback. Instead, the main reason premiums would be more affordable is that new government tax credits would help cover the cost for millions of people.

Listening to Obama pitch his plan, you might not realize that's how it works.

Old news, but of interest to this website: The White House website runs on Drupal.

What is Drupal? Drupal is an open-source content management software suite that this site also runs.

And that's your mid-week BINGO.
