The Times Square Terrorist
For all of thsoe who haven't been paying attention, there was an
attempted bombing in Times Square over the weekend (info here). Plenty of people in the media and the blogosphere have written about the event. I'd like to focus on what happens now rather than rehash the same old details.
There appears to be some debate about whether the individual who allegedly committed this act, Faisal Shahzad, should have been Mirandized. In a fit of confluence akin to the freezing of Hell, Conservative/Libertarian Firebrand Glenn Beck (video, 7:24) and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer both agree: Mirandizing Shahzad was the right way to go. I concur, for the same reasons these gentlemen and many others say so: Shahzad is a US citizen who committed an act on US soil that is a violation of US law, and was captured in the US by US Law Enforcement. In that regard, he is no different than Bernie Madoff or Jeff Skilling. Maybe it's me, but this seems like a no brainer. John McCain, however, seems to disagree.
Due Process is one of the fundamental underpinnings of our great country. Shahzad's going to benefit from some of the best representation in the world afforded to him by a country he hates. My only regret is that the crimes he's allegedly committed don't carry a capital sentence.
